Pandora’s Box
- Myth ~ ANCIENT GREEK ~ (Greek: "Gift-of-All") Pandora was the first mortal woman according to Greek myth. Zeus (the King of the Gods and God of the Sky) ordered Hephaistos (God of Fire and the Forge) to create her as retaliation for Prometheus giving fire to the mortal men. The other gods gave many gifts to Pandora; beauty, musical talent, and persuasion. Zeus then gave her a sealed jar (or box) and sent her to live among mortal men. She then married Epimetheus (Greek: "Afterthought"), the brother of Prometheus. Pandora’s curiosity eventually got the best of her and she opened the jar that Zeus had given her. From the jar emerged anxiety, disease, envy, misfortune, revenge, and spite (and a whole bunch of other nasty things). Pandora finally closed the jar, trapping hope within. In another version the jar contained blessings, but they were lost when she opened the jar.
- The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ Senator Kinsey calls the Stargate a "Pandora’s Box," meaning it has released "bad things" on the world, and has not yet brought any benefits (120 – Politics, 415 – Chain Reaction).

| Pegasus
- Myth ~ ANCIENT GREECE ~ He is the child of Poseidon (God of the Sea) and Medusa (the mortal Gorgon). He was born when the Greek hero Perseus, decapitated Medusa. He was pure white with a mane of gold. Later, the Corinthian hero, Bellerophon captured Pegasus with Athena's golden bridle and rode him into battle to kill the monster Chimera and to battle the Amazons. Later, Bellerophon tried to ride Pegasus to the top of Mount Olympus (the home of the gods), however, it is forbidden for mortals to go to there. On their assent, Pegasus threw Bellerophon and he rose up into the sky, where the winged horse became the constellation. Learn more: Windows to the Universe: Pegasus and Legg Middle School Planetarium: Constellation Pegasus.
- Science ~ ASTROLOGY ~ Abbreviated as Peg, it is located at Right Ascension: 22 hours, Declination: 20 degrees, and is visible between latitudes 90 and -60 degrees. It is one of the 88 modern constellations, and was also one of the 48 constellations listed by Ptolemy (Greek: Klaudios Ptolemaios; c. 85 – c. 165 AD). The stars that make up the constellation are: alpha Peg (Markab), beta Peg (Scheat), gamma Peg (Algenib), epsilon Peg (Enif), zeta Peg (Homam), eta Peg (Matar), theta Peg (Baham), and tau Peg (Salm). Four stars make up the asterism (A group of stars that is not a true constellation, similar to the Big and Little Dippers) known as the "Great Square of Pegasus;" they are alpha Peg, beta Peg, and gamma Peg. The fourth star, alpha And (originally called delta Peg), has recently been reassigned to the nearby constellation of Andromeda. There are many objects within Pegasus, including double stars, a globular cluster, and many galaxies. The double stars are xi Peg, epsilon Peg, kappa Peg, and 1 Peg. M15 is Pegasus’ globular cluster. It is a level 6th magnitude, which means that it is very dense, and can easily be see with binoculars or small telescopes (It will appear as a misty patch). There are roughly one dozen galaxies within Pegasus, with the brightest being NGC 7331. One of the stars, 51 Pegasi, is orbited by the first true extrasolar planets (A planet orbiting a star other than our Sun) to have been discovered. Two meteor showers are associated with Pegasus: Alpha Pegasids (Active from 29 October to 12 November) and Upsilon Pegasids (Active from 25 July to 19 August, with the maximum on 8 August). Pegasus is best seen in October around 9:00 PM. Learn more: Pegasus, The Fixed Stars: Pegasus, NGC 7331, and M 15.
- The Show (Stargate Atlåntis) ~ At the Ancients’ outpost in Antarctica, Daniel discovers that the Ancients had built a city, which was also a ship. They flew the city to the Pegasus Galaxy. In order for someone from Earth to visit this city via Stargate, an 8-chevron address is needed. However, the Stargate needs extra power to do this and the SGC decides to use Earth’s sole Zero-Point Module (ZPM; an Ancient power source) to achieve this. This may also drained the ZPM’s power, making this a one-way trip for the SGA team (101/102 – Rising).

Phoebus
- Myth ~ ANCIENT ROMAN/GREEK ~ Phoebus is the Latin form of Greek Phoibos ("Shining / Radiant One"). It is an epithet, or title, for Apollo. Phoebus Apollo is not the Sun-God (Helios / Sol is the Sun-God). He was the God of Archery, Dance, Medicine, Music, Poetry, and Prophecy. Apollo was also known as the God of Plague in the form of Smintheus (Sminthos, "Rat") and as Parnopius (Parnops, "Grasshopper"). As Phoebus, he was the God of Light. When her pod is opened, her consciousness is imprinted on Dr. Weir, the first living person to approach. The pod has automatically stored her personality because her body is dying. Phoebus says her people were explorers who were attached by the Wraith and that the other is her husband, Thalan. Phoebus allows Dr. Weir to resurface and confirm her story, and add that the imprint will last a few hours. Sheppard reluctantly agrees to the imprinting of Thalan. It turns out that they are actually the last surviving enemies of an ancient war. The two continue their feud in Atlantis, bent on the destruction of each other (216 – The Long Goodbye).

Phoenix
- Mythology ~ ANCIENT GREECE ~ (Greek: "Dark Red") The Phoenix lives in Arabia, near a cool well. Each morning at dawn, the Phoenix bathes in the well water and sings. Its song is so beautiful that Helios (see Sol) stops his chariot to listen. When its death was impending, every 500 or 1461 years, it would build a nest/funeral pyre of scented wood (cassia and frankincense). It would then set it on fire and become consumed by the flames. When the fire died out, a new phoenix sprang from the ashes for only one phoenix can exist at a time. According to Herodotus, the new Phoenix embalmed the ashes of its forerunner in an egg of made of myrrh and flew with it to Heliopolis, where the egg was left on Ra’s altar. It symbolizes the rising and setting of the sun, immortality, resurrection, and life after death. It is depicted as a peacock or a large eagle with brilliant gold, scarlet, and purple plumage. The Phoenix was associated with Phoebus Apollo. Comparable to the Egyptian Bennu and the Chinese Feng-huang.
- The Show (Stargate Atlåntis) ~ An alternate reality Daedalus-class ship, the Phoenix was commanded by Col. Carter in the fight against Michael (see Wraith). It was the next ship to be produced after the Apollo, and was armed with an Asgard plasma weapon. During a battle, three hive-ships ambushed it. With the systems failing, Carter crashed the Phoenix into one of the hive-ships, causing an explosion that would take out all three (420 - The Last Man). In this reality, The USS George Hammond (a new Daedalus-class ship) was originally named Phoenix, but was renamed after the General suddenly died of a heart attack. Carter is the commanding officer (520 – Enemy at the Gate).
- The Show (Stargate Universe) ~ Eli is beamed aboard the USS George Hammond after he solves the Dakara Weapons Puzzle from the Prometheus online game (101-102 – Air).

| Proculus
- Myth/History ~ ANCIENT ROME ~ In July of 716 BC, Proculus, a Patrician Senator, testifies on the death of Romulus, the first Emperor of Rome. Romulus was in Capra Palus (Goat’s Marsh), when the sky suddenly darkened in a solar eclipse. A bright light suddenly surrounded him and a flaming chariot carried Romulus into the heavens by Mars (See Ares), his father. Later, on the road to Alba Longa, Proculus recounts that Romulus descends from the heavens, more beautiful and larger than in real life, armed with shining weapons. Romulus tells him that he had been defied as Quirinus (An old Roman deity; was worshiped by the Sabines). It is now thought that Proculus told the story to cover up the murder of Romulus by the Senate.
- The Show (Stargate Atlåntis) ~ This is the home planet of Chaya Sar / Athar. The energy beam that protects the planet from the Wraith is actually Athar. The mortal people of Proculus have lived peacefully and free from disease and knowledge of the Wraith for many thousands of years. Prometheus
- Myth ~ ANCIENT GREECE ~ (Translation: "Forethought") He is the son of the Titan, Iapetus (son of Uranus and Gaia), husband of the sea-nymph Asia, and brother of Atlas, Menoetius, and Epimetheus. In the war against Cronus, Prometheus was one of the Titans who sided with Zeus. In the war, Zeus’ side was victorious, and he became King of the Gods. Zeus had hidden fire away from the mortal humans. Prometheus was fond of the humans and stole some of the fire, took it to earth, and gave it to the humans. Zeus was unhappy with this and ordered that Prometheus be chained to a rock where a giant eagle would peck at and eat his liver. Well, since Prometheus was immortal, his liver would re-grow every night only to be eaten again the next day. Prometheus gained his freedom by revealing to Zeus the prophesy about Thetys.
- The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ The Prometheus Project is the code name for the X-303. It is the third ship developed that combines both human and Goa’uld technology. Its hyper-drive is powered by naquadria (see Naquadah) and is Earth’s first working engine capable of interstellar travel. The sub-light-speed engine can increase in speed to 110000 miles per second, and can also reach orbit in less than 30 seconds. Hijackers posing as reporters take the ship and demand the release of Colonel Simmons (who ran the NID after Maybourne) and the Goa’uld of Adrian Conrad. Simmons who, before he was arrested, had found a tablet with the Ancients writing on it and he took it to Conrad’s Goa’uld to be translated. It told of a planet that was a stash of weapons (or so they thought). When they arrived at the location via a blind hyper-jump, there was no planet. SG-1 regained control of the ship; but before they could figure out how to get home, Thor asks for their help (611 – Prometheus). It is revealed that the Prometheus can carry eight X-302 fighters. Thor brought Asgard-designed shields and weapons to be installed, as a thank you for the SGC’s recent help in the battle against the Replicators. The research for the hyperdrive has cost over 2 billion dollars (617 – Disclosure). During its shakedown cruise, the Naquadria buffer overloaded while the ship was passing through an intense gravity wave of an exploding star while in hyperspace. Jonas looked at the Cartouche and found that the near-by planet Tegrea (P3X-744) had a Stargate. However, after the short jump to Tegrea, the buffer overloaded and had to be jettisoned. The resulting electro-magnetic shock wave damaged the ship and systems on the surface of the planet (620 – Memento). Was destroyed by an Ori satellite weapon in orbit around Caledonia; the Odyssey is now Earth's primary vessel (See Ethon) (915 -- Ethon).
- The Show (Stargate Universe) ~ O’Neill and Dr. Nicholas Rush show up at Eli Wallace’s house after he solves the Dakara Weapons Puzzle in the Prometheus online fantasy game. The Dakara Puzzle is actually an Ancient mathematical proof, which allows for a ninth chevron to be dialed on the Stargate (101-102 – Air).
